Elon Musk plans to send 10 Lakh people to Mars by 2050

SAN FRANCISCO: SpaceX CEO Elon Musk aims to send 10 lakh people to Mars by 2050 and in a series of tweets, has revealed how is he going to achieve the daunting task of colonizing the Red Planet and make humans beings 'multi-planetary'.

Throwing more details about his Starship program, Musk said the rocket would carry many megatons of cargo per year to the Red Planet to prepare Mars for a human presence by mid-century.

"The goal of Starship's design is an average rate of 3 flights/day, therefore more than 1,000 flights/year at over 100 tons/flight, so that every 10 ships produce 1 megaton per year in orbit," he explained Musk to his 30.7 million followers.

The orbital spacecraft prototype, designed "SN1", is currently under construction at the SpaceX facility in Texas. "The construction of 100 spaceships per year reaches 1,000 in 10 years or 100 megatons/year or perhaps around 100,000 people via Earth-Mars orbital synchronization," said SpaceX CEO.

SpaceX's goal, according to Musk, is to finally send 10 lakh people to Mars by 2050. In September last year, SpaceX asked NASA to provide possible landing sites on the Red Planet. SpaceX is building the spacecraft (formerly known as BFR), a fully reusable vehicle designed to transport humans and supplies to Mars.

Musk previously raised the idea that warming Mars would be key to making it habitable for humans and one way to do it would be to launch it.

It reached the figure after estimating the approximate future cost of sending a minimum payload to Mars "in the nearest order of magnitude", at $ 100,000 per tonne. So if building a self-sufficient city on Mars requires a million tons of goods, the cost would be around $ 100 billion, Musk calculated.
