According to media reports, an Ettumannur nurse in the Kottayam district, who works at Al Hayat hospital in Saudi Arabia, tested positive for the new coronavirus, which killed 17 people in China.
At least 30 Kerala nurses also remained in solitary confinement in the hospital and took care of a Filipino nurse who proved positive for the virus, according to reports.
However, sources in the Thiruvananthapuram health department said they had no information on the state nurses who were affected. The department issued an alarm following the virus outbreak in China.
In Kerala, Prime Minister Pinarayi Vijayan urged the union's foreign minister, S Jaishankar, to address the issue with the Gulf nation and ensure expert treatment for nurses.
Vijayan made the request in a letter to Jaishankar on the matter, said a statement from the Prime Minister's office in Thiruvananthapuram.
State health minister KK Shyalaja said that those returning from China should inform district medical officials as well as instruct officials to intensify surveillance at the four airports: Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi, Kozhikode, and Kannur, in the lo state.
The government should contact its counterpart in Saudi Arabia and take urgent measures that include ensuring the treatment and protection of experts for people affected by the virus. The issue must be viewed seriously, Vijayan said in the letter.
