Moderate earthquake jolts Assam, north Bengal


A magnitude 5 earthquake shook Assam and surrounding areas on Saturday evening, but there was no immediate news of casualties or property damage, police said.

The epicenter of the earthquake was located 16 km east of Abhayapuri, in the Bongaigaon district, according to reports from the United States Geological Survey (USGS).


The earthquake also rocked some districts in northern Bengal, including Jalpaiguri, Coochbehar and Alipurduar, sources said.



The tremors were felt around 6 pm.
